Grief
A textile approach to loss

The feeling of grief is the starting point for this project. In exploring this, I came across Verena Kast's 4-Phase Model, which I have renamed for myself.

For each phase I painted a picture which serves as a starting point for both the colour and the appearance of the textile samples.
The hand-dyed textile samples were cut into round shapes and arranged on a repurposed curtain as a kind of stone path. The "stones" were appliquéd with a freehand embroidery machine and accentuated by expanding their shapes. The spaces were refined with fancy yarn, and the quilt was quilted using batting and vermicelli stitch. Finally, I hand-stitched small mirrors. These are intended to reflect the viewer along the "Path of Grief."
