The colors of the hazel
natural dyeing methods and artistic techniques on textiles
November 2024
Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, BA Textile Design
This project investigates the color diversity that can be achieved solely by using hazel as a plant dye and applying dye baths to protein and cellulose fibers.
The research question is: How diverse is the color palette that can be produced using hazel as a sole plant source, and which color patterns are particularly relevant for textile designers?
By dyeing using dye baths, a "hazel card index" was created – a collection of samples that documents the different color results and variations and provides instructions for reproducibility.
For the final evaluation of the color samples, other textile designers and designers were interviewed to select the most relevant colors and create a “hazel color fan.”
Finally, textile works were created using the favorite colors, creatively illustrating the possible applications of hazel colors.
