The Colors of the Hazel

natural dyeing methods and artistic techniques on textiles

This project investigates the variety of colors that can be achieved solely by using hazel as a plant dye and applying dye baths to protein and cellulose fibers.

The research question is: How diverse is the colour palette that can be produced using hazel as a sole plant source, and which colour patterns are particularly relevant for textile designers?

By dyeing using dye baths, a "hazel card index" was created - a collection of samples that documents the different color results and variations and provides instructions for reproducibility.

For the final evaluation of the colour samples, other textile designers and designers were interviewed to select the most relevant colours and create a “hazel colour fan” from them.

Finally, textile works were created using the favorite colors, which creatively illustrate the possible applications of hazel colors.
